The Language of Thankfulness

I say "thanks" but am I really? There are times I say "thank you" and really mean it but are there times when it is okay to not be thankful? For example, why should I be thankful when relationships fall apart? Should I be thankful when people I love battle cancer? Is thankfulness more than just a verbal expression of saying "thanks?" What does the Bible say about our "Language of Thankfulness?" What should we give thanks for? How do we give thanks when we don't feel like it? Are we really supposed to give thanks in all circumstances? If so what does that look like?
